John F. Kelly, PhD

Dr. John F. Kelly is the Program Director of the Addiction Recovery Management Service (ARMS) and Associate Director of the Center for Addiction Medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). He also serves as an Associate Professor in Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and as a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in the treatment of addiction and dual-diagnosis.

A leader in the field of program evaluation and addiction treatment and recovery research, Dr. Kelly is a consultant to the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT), and the U.S Department of Education. He also serves on the Executive Committee of the American Psychological Association, Division on Addictions, and as a scientific consultant to the National Institutes of Health. He has published more than 70 scientific articles, reviews and book chapters in the field of addiction and together with William L. White, has published the first text on the theory, science, and practice of addiction recovery management. He has received several grant awards from the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) and the Hazelden Foundation for his work on treatment process and outcomes, informal care utilization among adolescents and adults, and mechanisms of behavior change in addiction recovery.

Dr. Kelly completed his doctoral training at the University of California, San Diego/San Diego State University joint program in clinical psychology and completed his pre-doctoral internship and a postdoctoral fellowship in addiction studies at the Brown University Medical School, Center for Alcohol and Addiction Studies.
